Prepare the people for the 2nd coming – Be Holy

15 Sep

Sermon excerpts of Senior Pastor Djohan and summarized by Ps Gilbert,

The Jewish New Year for this coming 24-sep-14 : Ayin Hey (5775)

Ayin talks about the eye

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. (‭Psalms‬ ‭32‬:‭8‬ NASB)

Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, So our eyes look to the LORD our God, Until He is gracious to us. (‭Psalms‬ ‭123‬:‭2‬ NASB)

We need to keep our eyes on The Lord so that we are safe
The year of Ayin Hey talks about shaking

1. Year of Shaking
– NASA said that there are 4 major events in space in 2014/2015 ( blood moon, eclipse of the sun) – tetrad
– all of the 4 events happen on the Jewish festival (Passover, Sukkot- feast of Tabernacle)

Before them the earth quakes, The heavens tremble, The sun and the moon grow dark And the stars lose their brightness. The LORD utters His voice before His army; Surely His camp is very great, For strong is he who carries out His word. The day of the LORD is indeed great and very awesome, And who can endure it?

“I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire and columns of smoke. “The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood Before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. “And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD Will be delivered; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape, As the LORD has said, Even among the survivors whom the LORD calls. (‭Joel‬ ‭2‬:‭10-11, 30-32‬ NASB)

Blood moon (major events)

We need to be people of God ready for Him, let us live our life according to God
– we carry the holiness of God, we carry the presence of God

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.” If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; (‭1 Peter‬ ‭1‬:‭14-17‬ NASB)

What is holiness:-
1. Holiness means we are set apart
2. Holiness talks about obedience

– salvation is free gift from God
– your faith is a process, sanctification is a process

Psalm 51 – psalm of David, he felt so distance and he asked The Lord to cleanse him and not to take His Spirit from him.

When God gives us the law we are safe.

knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. (‭1 Peter‬ ‭1‬:‭18-19‬ NASB)

– don’t lead a foolish life. God paid with the precious blood of Christ
– obey the Word of God

When I read of the massacre in Newtown Conn, USA I cried. It is unthinkable that anyone would deliberately kill 5 year olds. I could not even begin to think of the pain the parents are suffering.

And then I remembered that some 2000 years ago Herod deliberately sent soldiers to kill all male children aged 2 and under. Eerily it echoes the scripture “A voice was heard in Ramah, Rachel refusing to be comforted because her children are no more”. Parents in Bethlehem mourned for the senseless killing of innocent little boys. I cannot imagine the mourning, the grief and tears in Newtown Conn where probably everyone would personally know someone who lost a child or friend. Dr Ray Pritchard says that evil caused this and I agree.

There is no guarantee that evil is restricted to the United States. Only prayer and constant vigilance over one’s own inclinations to evil thoughts may be the answer. Don’t be offended at this please. Every one of us has evil (as opposed to godly, Christ-directed) thoughts.

It seems impossible to return good for evil. Someone said that if everyone demanded an eye for an eye then the world would be blind. That is what is happening. There is more blindness as people start demanding revenge under the guise of “justice”. We need to let the light of Christ shine through our lives. To do that we need to let the light shine INTO our lives first. Do we dare? That light will show us parts of our hearts we would rather keep hidden but that is the only way to keep evil out.

This issue of the English Bulletin features a poem that begins “Twas 11 days before Christmas” It is a wonderful comforting glimpse of the hope we have in Christ in a world gripped by evil. Jesus is still in control.

Make a commitment this Christmas. Let the Light of Christ shine through you and He will stop the evil.

Grace and peace be with you this Christmas

Before the 1997/1998 Asian financial crisis we were very very comfortable financially. Then with the crash we had to sell several of our properties in quick succession as “damage control”. A woman’s instinctive reaction in such situations is to “preserve stocks”. She begins to be careful about spending and, in my case, I started paying attention to prices.(Never had to before that). During supermarket shopping the children were usually allowed to “help” choose things to put into the trolley which was always overflowing by the time we reached the checkout counter.

On one trip to the supermarket, at the time of the financial crisis, I had to repeatedly say to the children”No, dear, not that” or “no we don’t need that” and other remarks in the same genre. Then as we neared the checkout counter the children came near and a “spokesman” asked, “Are we poor Mummy?” I looked at them standing around the half-filled trolley. All of them had something in their hands like biscuits or sweets and packet milo.

I struggled for an answer. We stood in the middle of an aisle and they were gathered around the trolley, waiting quietly for my reply.

Eventually I said “Well honey, you have mummy and papa. We have a house to live in and food to eat and clothes to wear. You can go to school and come home to play with each other. What do you think?”

They stood quiet for a few seconds then one said “oh we’re not poor Mummy, we’re rich!” Then, to my surprise and gratification the 3 big ones turned to the 3 small ones (at that time we worked on a buddy system) and told them that we didn’t need all the biscuits and, before I could react, all scurried away, racing to see who could return the biscuits and sweets to the shelves the fastest. They came back to the trolley out of breath and laughing.

I am a “strong” woman so I managed to hold my tears till that night when I related the incident to my husband. The joyful way they grasped the truth of true riches amazed, humbled and strengthened me then and every time the Lord brings that back to me.

My prayer is that this Christmas all of us will be blessed with the same childlike understanding of true riches… we have eternal life because the Father was pleased to send His beloved Son “so that all who believed in Him should not perish but have eternal life”.

Merry Christmas!

Thank-you Lord

“We’ve only just begun to live

White lace and promises

A Kiss for luck and we’re on our way”

This is part of the Carpenters’ song “We’ve only just begun” and it was particularly meaningful for me when I was married in 1982. Like all newly weds we had absolutely NO IDEA what our wedding vows meant. We were starry-eyed and hopeful.

Thirty years down the road we realise how God has protected us and our children every step of the way. For those of you who have read my testimonies it may seem boring…what? Thanks AGAIN? Yup…absolutely…. And all the thanks I say will never be enough. We have had our bad patches… we’ve argued and quarrelled ( I will say this about my husband… he never did let the sun go down on his anger…. That meant not sleeping till 5am if necessary so that we could talk everything out and make-up before we went to sleep for an hour before waking for the new day).

Thirty years, 5 sons, 1 daughter and 1 son-in-law, many tears, much much more laughter, hugs and kisses and lots of memories. Only two words “Thank-you Lord”

I was kind of training (initially not too seriously) for my physical fitness test called NAPFA. If I had failed this test I would have had to go into the army 8 weeks earlier, which was on September 6th 2012. I first took this test in school in December of 2011 and failed. The problem for me is that I had stopped playing sports ever since I had entered Polytechnic and was quite unfit, not exercising for nearly three years.

As the months had passed, I had taken this test a few more times and failed. The last chance I had to take the test was on 22nd August 2012. But I wanted pass on the 15th. From around mid July, I started training hard. I didn’t eat any unhealthy food (which I wanted). But on 15th August, I failed once again (even though I was sure I was able to pass). I was really upset and just wanted to give up. But my parents, family and friends encouraged me to try one more time. So I continued training and by God’s grace, I was able to pass this physical fitness test finally, on the very last chance I had to avoid going early into the army.

This testimony is not about “your breakthrough is around the corner”. The main point is that, even though I know, in terms of the doctrinal aspects about the sovereignty and supremacy of God, it was much harder to actually surrender to His sovereignty and supremacy. I knew and I had already told God that I was ready to go into the army earlier if that was His will, because I never knew what God would have in store for me if I had enlisted earlier.

Even if I had failed and had to enter the army earlier, I know God has a purpose and it was for His glory. Because my life is not about me but it is about Him. The focus is not health, wealth and prosperity, the focus is Jesus Christ and Him crucified (1 Cor 2:2). That is what I want more in my life, by His grace, for His glory. Amen.

(But I am glad that He allowed me to pass – finally- and enlist at the end of Oct instead of beginning of September )

Glory to God

We are all called to preach the Gospel (Mark 16:15) and to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-20). Though God is sovereign, we are still called to preach the Gospel. Wherever we are, God has placed us there for a reason and that is our mission field. I was in Ngee Ann Polytechnic for 3 years. That was my mission field for those 3 years. But as of now, I am about to go to a different mission field. I know that I must be the salt and the light where I go, for His glory alone.

As I write this testimony, I am about to enter the army to serve my National Service, but whoever I will meet, whoever God will place with me, I know it will not be coincidence. I pray that God will give me wisdom and boldness as I go to the army.

But as for all of us, it is important to preach the Gospel and I would like to exhort whoever reads this testimony, that the Gospel means Good News. Let us step up and tell the world the Good News that the Son of God became the Son of man that He may be crucified for our sins. He who knew no sin, became an offering for our sins (author’s translation) – 2 Corinthians 5:21.

Also remember the sovereignty and supremacy of God. It is His sovereign choice (Romans 9:15).

All glory to God

Editor’s Note : Elliot enlisted on 30 October 2012. This is one of his messages sent to fellow Seekers during the period of confinement on Pulau Tekong:

“I wanted the easiest company, I got one of the hardest. I wanted a low level bunk, I got the highest, on the 5th level. I’m being pushed further in a way I have never expected. But I know this is the mission field God has given me. The people I meet are not by coincidence. Please pray for me as I show the love of Christ in this area of darkness, God bless.”

For more than 2 months I have been looking for a job. I sent in my resume for full time jobs in engineering field as well as in the public sector but there was no response from any company.

In the meantime, I was advised to look for a temporary job to begin with. So I applied for temporary jobs through job portal and through recruitment agencies and even went for some interviews but still there seem to be no progress in getting a job.

Two weeks ago in the evening after sending resumes to companies and recruitment agencies, I was wondering if I would get a job by the end of this month (Oct). It was difficult for me to believe that I would get a job soon in the face of the lack of responses. However God reminded me through the sermon on Sunday to trust and to rely in Him. I asked God for forgiveness and placed my hope in Him.

Last Friday, I went for a job interview with a recruitment agency in the morning. I was offered 2 jobs but I chose the one where I do not have to work on weekends. I was hoping to get employed but the recruit consultant merely said that he would forward my resume to the company and that the company would contact me in a week or two if I am shortlisted.

On my way home I was reflecting on the past 2 months and the process of finding a job. I asked God what He was teaching me and what He wanted me to realise. Then I received a call from another recruit company. I was given an appointment for an interview in the afternoon on the same day. I agreed to come for interview. I went home to have lunch first and then spent time in prayer in seeking His will for me. God was looking at my heart and my motive in wanting to get a job. Just like any ordinary man, I was thinking that if I get a well paid job, I can be financially stable. There is nothing wrong in being financially stable but I was missing out the most important thing. The work we do is also a ministry to the Lord Jesus. God was correcting me and aligning me to focus onto Jesus Christ. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23. Then I said to God, “Lord it does not matter what the salary is. Lord Jesus, may You provide me a job where You are at work that I could be Your instrument there. Have Your way in me. Amen”

Later in the afternoon, I went for the interview and I was offered a job in a bank that very day. I thank God for the job. I thank God for His mercy and grace upon me and correcting me to focus onto Jesus and His purpose for me. I also thank God for all my brothers and sisters in Christ who have been praying for me.

Our God is an Awesome God!

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9

All glory, honour and praise are to the Lord Jesus Christ forever and ever! Amen.
